Our Difference

A culture of expertise and service.

Advice that is transparent, conflict-free, and always in your best interest. We provide clarity to address concerns clients may not have considered, enabling sustainable progress toward their financial goals.

Our Philosophy

Better because we operate differently.

Active Listening

Only by asking the right questions and actively listening can we identify and understand your unique opportunities and challenges. Armed with that knowledge we design and implement an optimal financial plan or investment strategy for you.

And we keep listening to ensure we remain well informed of upcoming changes in your life to quickly address any issues that may arise. Our clients routinely tell us that our level of communication is a welcome change from what they've experienced in the past.

Ensuring Client Understanding

We do more than design effective financial plans — we want to make sure you have a clear understanding of how and why the plan works for your family. We explain complex matters in plain, straightforward language and provide easy-to-understand reports.

White Oak is a fee-only firm, compensated only through the fee we receive directly from our clients. This fiduciary standard means we have removed conflicts of interest to do what is best for you, not us.

Total Wealth Management

We are a proactive, ongoing resource for our clients for advice on all of their financial issues. These can range from managing debt, helping a client's aging parents address senior living considerations, and evaluating the sale of closely held businesses.

We can't just design a financial plan and hope everything falls into place. Clients need a steady hand to guide them through difficult decisions to ensure their financial plan remains intact.

Truly Individualized Attention

We manage our growth to maintain a low client-to-advisor ratio so we have the time required to provide the customized service you deserve. Our culture of independence enables White Oak to dedicate the resources essential for customized advice.

We couple that with the resources of a larger firm — award-winning online technology, industry-leading research, and a dedicated financial planning team.

David Berger

Client Advisor · Managing Partner

David Berger

Dave founded White Oak in 2016 with a mission to empower clients to become engaged with their financial plan and in control of their financial future. White Oak was designed as a client service company and everything we do is focused on providing transparent, customized financial advice in accordance with our fiduciary duty. Today, White Oak stands apart from other firms in an industry mired by conflicts of interest and a lack of transparency. Dave believes clients are best served by an advisory relationship rooted in clarity, trust, and a commitment to putting client interests first.

Dave's interest in finance and investing began in high school and eventually led him to earn both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degree in Finance from the University of Baltimore. That early interest grew into a professional calling to help individuals and families understand complex financial decisions with clarity and consistent guidance.

Following a successful 20 year career in the banking, trust, and registered investment advisory industries, Dave brings a deep understanding of the complexities families face as they plan, invest, and preserve wealth. He works closely with clients to deliver thoughtful guidance and candid advice, helping families build sustainable financial independence. Dave continues to work with clients as well as many of their adult children, ensuring that White Oak's commitment to service endures for multiple client generations.

Outside of White Oak, Dave enjoys volunteering, traveling, golfing, and spending time with his wife and daughter. He serves on the Advisory Board of Historic Ships in Baltimore and chairs their finance committee.

Our Name

The story behind White Oak.

White Oak Wealth Management is named to honor the state tree of Maryland.

The white oak tree symbolizes the many benefits of developing and following a disciplined financial plan. White oaks grow from tiny acorns into enormous trees over a period of years, just as an investment portfolio does when managed according to an individual's needs and goals.

White oaks experience varying levels of annual acorn production. However, every two to five years a white oak will produce a "mast" year in which it produces up to 10,000 acorns — a reminder that patience and discipline, applied consistently, yield extraordinary results.

What makes us different?

Our Philosophy Client Stories

Client Success Stories

The value of personal client relationships.

We focus on your entire balance sheet — not just investable assets. The following examples illustrate the range of issues we have successfully navigated with our clients.

Long-term investment strategy Workplace retirement plan advice Consolidation of multiple portfolios

Corporate Executive

This client is a successful financial services executive who has worked for various corporations. She had numerous 401(k) plans and IRAs that she wanted to consolidate and have managed pursuant to a long-term growth strategy.

We worked with the client to identify where each account was held and facilitated the transfer of all workplace retirement plans to our firm. We then designed and implemented an investment strategy to achieve long-term growth of capital for her retirement and non-retirement assets.

We also optimized the asset allocation for her existing workplace retirement plan pursuant to her goals and objectives. Today, for the first time she feels that her financial life is "in order" and that her money is working for her.

Holistic financial planning Stock option strategies Education planning

Executive at a Publicly Traded Company

Our client owned a substantial amount of incentive stock options and restricted stock grants of his employer's stock. He and his wife wanted to maximize the value of the options to fund college savings for their two daughters.

We organized the options and restricted stock based on vesting schedules and strike prices. We worked with our in-house equity research analyst to implement an option execution strategy that would enable the clients to utilize the options and restricted stock in a timely manner to begin funding college savings plans.

We designed and implemented a holistic financial plan that included using additional options proceeds to fund retirement. The client subsequently requested that we oversee investment portfolios held at other firms which we now manage for long-term growth.

Retirement income planning Risk-managed returns Holistic retirement advice

Healthcare Administrator Entering Retirement

Our client was a few months from retirement and did not have a retirement plan in place. We worked with him to identify all retirement income resources as well as his desired retirement date and projected retirement income needs.

We designed an investment strategy that would supplement his other sources of retirement income and weather market volatility to preserve his ability to meet income needs well into retirement. And we did it without annuities or insurance products.

We also helped the client identify changes to make prior to retirement, including paying off debt and setting liquid resources aside to fund significant upcoming expenses.

Financial statement oversight Estate planning Comprehensive investment strategies

Client with Multiple Businesses and Commercial Real Estate

Our client has a large balance sheet with lots of moving parts. Perhaps more than anything else, he needed someone to act as his personal Chief Financial Officer.

Through an extensive discovery process we worked with the client to identify and track every asset he owns and developed a system to update the value of those holdings on a quarterly basis. We manage his personal financial statements and coordinate the distribution of those statements to various parties as directed by the client.

We serve as a central point of contact for private investments and family trusts, provide advice on managing business entities and evaluating acquisition opportunities, and developed strategic investment strategies for taxable and tax-exempt portfolios for the client's family.
